THE DEPUTY
Toby Sawyer is a twenty-something part-time deputy in the middle-of-nowhere town Coyote Crossing, Oklahoma. He’s pulled out of bed in the middle of the night to babysit a dead body in the middle of Main Street. Little does Toby know that this is about to be the longest night of his life. He finds himself in a brutal battle against Mexican smugglers, a corrupt police force and the town bad boys, the Jordan Brothers.
Along the way, Toby discovers the truth about himself, his wife and the little home town he just can’t seem to escape. Who will still be alive in Coyote Crossing when the sun comes up?

Reviews:
“solid noir from Gischler (Suicide Squeeze)...it leaves the door open for a sequel, which would be a welcome prospect, given Toby's appeal as a protagonist.” - Publisher's Weekly
“Now this is about as fast-fucking-paced as books get, one giant hair-raising game of out-of-the-frying-pan-and-into-fire. But what makes The Deputy really sing is the sad little realities of Toby’s fucked life. That Gischler can squeeze all this fantastic character work into the book’s timeline, which is really just a few hours and billion awesome action set-pieces long, is a testament to his storytelling abilities. Make no mistake: this shit is just as fast and funny as what we’ve come to expect from the man who gave us such classics as Pistol Poets and Shotgun Opera; it’s just that this time out it hurts more, the characters dig under a couple more layers of your skin. The Deputy is Victor Gischler’s finest book to date, and you better fucking believe that’s fucking saying something.” – BSC Review
"THE DEPUTY is a dark, dusty, full-bore blast of nonstop violence and corruption. But we’re talking Gischler here, so that means it’s also a hell of a lot of fun, too. Before the first chapter is over, Gischler has the pedal to the floor and doesn’t let up until the epilogue. This kind of story fits Gischler like a favorite pair of Levis..he returns to contemporary crime fiction with a renewed vigor and a take-no-prisoners attitude that’s a downright joy to behold. Go get THE DEPUTY, but be prepared to put a few hours aside exclusively for it. It’s that kind of book." - Alan Cranis, Bookgasm
Blurbs:
“Call Victor Gischler a noirist with a wicked comic streak or call him a satirist who writes breathless thrill rides, but either way, he’s one of the best crime writers going. Like everything Gischler turns out, The Deputy is a one-sitting read. Bravo.” – Marcus Sakey, author of The Amateurs
“A succulently pulpy stor y about a supreme slackass.” – Allan Guthrie, author of Hardman
“Toby Sawyer is an anti-hero for the ages, and The Deputy will drag you along in a cloud of gunsmoke, burned rubber and road dust from the first chapter to the last. You better keep up, because this book is fast and funny and about real people, the kind only the best writers can create. Victor Gischler is a pro.” – Michael Koryta, author of The Silent Hour
